1. Massive visibility of performance
2. Core values
3. Courageous communication
Early in my career as a startup Founder I had the experience of allowing an underperforming salesperson "to be successful somewhere else". After the individual had left, remaining team members where surprised as "he was a nice guy" and "he was doing okay, wasn't he?"
Immediately a lightbulb went off! We had no visibility of performance.
I realised my role, and that of any leader, is to not only communicate our vision, but also to ensure everyone in the organisation:
1. Knew what was expected of them
2. How they were performing against that expectation
3. And importantly, how they were expected to behave whilst achieving their goals
A leader is failing if they are ever asked "am I doing a good job"?
If a key element of high performing cultures is massively visible performance metrics, then courageous communication is equally important. What is courageous communication? Clear and direct feedback, always layered with compassion and respect. Never forget the human element of any performance conversation.
Only though open and direct communication can an improvement plan be implemented identify and rectify off track performance.
Creating a high performing culture does not happen by accident.
